My Story
Hi I’m Jason Mills, Certified Coach and the Founder of Belong Project, and I am #madebydyslexia!
When I was young, I faced challenges in school and struggled to adapt to the mainstream education system. From kindergarten to 8th grade, I managed to go unnoticed, but this approach held me back. By the time I reached 8th grade, my reading and writing skills were at a 3rd-grade level, and I received an official diagnosis of Learning Disabled. Seeking assistance, I underwent evaluations that revealed behavior problems and dyslexia. At the age of 14, I was sent to a boarding school in New Mexico primarily due to my behavioral issues, an experience I didn't enjoy. During that time, I encountered a traumatic event involving my mother, which made me feel trapped. Consequently, I made several attempts to run away and acted out as a result of feeling unintelligent and lost.
1973 - Born
1979 - learned I was adopted.
1988 - Completed Middle School (Group 8) Diagnosed with Behavioral Disorders. Illinois.
1989 - Attended The Brush Ranch School in Terrero, New Mexico. Mother was almost killed in an accident and lost her memory.
In an effort to address my learning difficulties, I was transferred to another school in Massachusetts that offered year-round classes with the aim of accelerating my progress and preparing me for university. I made significant progress in that environment but still needed one final push.
As a result, I enrolled in another school that specialized in supporting students with dyslexia, and there, I finally found success. While I wasn't a straight-A student, I learned to navigate my dyslexia and managed to pass my SATs, securing admission to a university. Throughout this journey, I discovered my passion for design and began referring to my dyslexia as "design thinking." Recently, an organization called Made By Dyslexia introduced the concept of Dyslexic Thinking, which deeply resonated with me.
1989 - Sent to The High Croft School in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Attending school for summers and school year.
1990 - Sent to The Landmark School. Attended summer and school year. A school specialized in supporting dyslexia.
1992 - Graduated from The Landmark School and was accepted to The University of Wisconsin into their Project Success program to help aid students with Dyslexia.
1995 - Transferred to DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois.
1998 - I graduated from DePaul and started my first job at Ogilvy, a worldwide advertising agency.
For the past 25 years, I have been working as a designer, having had the opportunity to contribute to numerous worldwide campaigns, start companies, assist leaders, and experience both failures and successes. Despite all these endeavors, my Dyslexic Thinking has remained a constant. I firmly believe in never giving up, learning from every experience, and continually moving forward. After spending so long as a designer, I began contemplating a change but was unsure of what direction to take. It was then that my wife Nicole suggested I explore becoming a coach by taking some courses. I enrolled in the program and immediately fell in love with the process. Today, with over 200 hours of coaching experience, I am dedicated to helping people design the lives they want to live.
The Belong Project is not only my personal journey but also an opportunity for others to discover where they belong. I particularly focus on assisting individuals with dyslexia, helping both parents and students recognize the strength of Dyslexic Thinking. My aim is to transform the negative mindset often associated with dyslexia into a superpower.
